MORNING MIXTAPE'S FRIDAY FEST

Each Friday we go to Bakeries around Christchurch to find which bakery is the best. This task is harder than it seems as Luca is apparently New Zealand’s top food connoisseur. Tune in every Friday at 9.30 to hear our thoughts.

Village Bakehouse

211 Waimairi Road, Ilam, Christchurch 8041

We had a Mince and Cheese Pie and a Chocolate slice. Village bakehouse was a strong contenter to start with, their pastry was the true stand-out of the experience. It's an example of the elevation of bakeries going from making generic pies to more gourmet food. The slice tasted was as it appears, no-frills but an all-around solid experience. Bang for buck was not quite there in our opinion.

Overall

Pie - 3.5/5

Slice - 3.3/5

Aorangi Bakery

169 Wairakei Road, Bryndwr, Christchurch 8053

To keep it consistent we had a Mince and Cheese and Chocolate slice. Aorangi bakery was near perfect apart from its meat quality, but I genuinely thought it was an amazing pie and showed glimpses of South Auckland pies. Joe from the Up and Go show with Gus and Joe said that the Steak and Cheese pie from Aorangi. Bang for buck was not there at all but it was made up in taste.

Pie - 4/5

Slice - 3/5

Coupland's Bakeries

All around Christchurch and the South Island

Coupland’s is such good bang for your buck that we tried 5 pies and 2 slices. The Mince and Vege and Mince and Cheese both had a solid pastry base but the mince easy spilt out. The Steak and Vege were a step up as the Steak chunks melted nicely in your mouth. Steak and Jalapeno Cheese had a nice kick to it which amplified the classic pie. Finally, the Crusader's Pie tasted like a Winter Stew wrapped up in a cheesy pastry.

The Fudge slice was reminiscent of school-shared lunches however it was very sweet. The Belgium slice tasted like grandma's baking which was lovely. The fact we got 5 pies and 2 family share slices for the same price of two pies and a slice at other bakeries, puts Coupland’s in the lead for Bang for buck.

Overall

Pies

Mince and Vege (Square Pie) - 3/5, Mince and Cheese  - 3/5, Steak and Vege - 3.5/5, Steak and Jalapeno Cheese - 4/5, Crusaders Pie - 4.5/5

Slices

Chocolate Fudge - 2/5, Belgium Slice - 3.5/5

Sydenham Bakery

424 Colombo Street, Sydenham, Christchurch 8023

8/501 Wairakei Road, Harewood, Christchurch 8053

Undoubtedly a local gem! It delivered quality all round and very aesthetically pleasing food. The quality goes far beyond just the exterior. The filling and contents of all the baked goods we tried satisfied all the senses until the last bite.

Bang for buck is unbeatable (so far at least) if you are looking for a larger than average pie with a larger than life flavour profile, this is a definite place to visit for yourself.

The mince and cheese pie had an amazing tomato flavour to it which made it both sweet and savoury. The chocolate slice was the first of the slice we have had that contained nuts which made it taste phenomenal.

Overall

Pie 4.5/5

Slice 3.5/5

Burwood Bakery

265 Burwood Road, Burwood, Christchurch 8083

While this bakery is a bit of a drive from the city centre it is well worth it, you can taste the love and care into each and every item they have made. It is understandable why this bakery comes highly recommended.

This is not a pie you should eat while you are driving, the flaky pastry makes for a wonderful taste but a huge mess so we would recommend taking the time to sit down and relax while eating the amazing pies. The mince and chees had an awesome savoury taste with the surprise of caramelised onions.

The slice tasted like a next-level version of home baking and while it was a bit sweet for our like it is perfect for the sweet tooth in your life.
